second life

The first part of my bachelors examwork explored the potential of re-using local waste and salvaged wood and discarded furniture. Could these found materials determine a future design and begin a second life?

Recycling material on an industrial scale works on the composition and purity of materials - mono-materials work best. For example, In Sweden, solid wood waste is broken down and made into pellets for heating homes. Likewise aluminum can be melted down to be made into another product or componant. These processes involve energy use but are a viable efficicient use of waste material.

My question was to find more value in these materials in their existing state. How could they be best re-used with the minimum of energy, and become 'new' functional objects?
